As incredible as it may seem, the story of Ireland's most famous holiday begins in Great Britain.

Want to know how? Let's go to the story of St. Patrick's Day!

The life of Saint Patrick

Patrick, the Irish symbol, was born in the 4th century in England.

The story goes that he lived until he was 16 years old in the country, with pagan beliefs and customs. In fact, his name wasn't even originally Patrício.

What changed Saint Patrick's fate was the fact that he was kidnapped by pirates and sold as a slave to Ireland.

There, he lived in captivity for 6 years, when he began to approach the Catholic religion.

However, Patrick managed to escape from prison and return to England, where he studied for 12 years in a monastery and ended up becoming a Catholic bishop in 432.

That was when he gained the name Patrício.

Feeling a divine call to return to Ireland and rid the country of Celtic paganism, Patrício returned to the country that imprisoned him to evangelize the people in Catholic doctrine.

There, he was a missionary for 30 years and moved to County Down, where he died on March 17, 461.

Creation

Saint Patrick's Day emerged in 1903 as a religious commemoration of the life of this holy man.

It always took place on March 17th, the anniversary of his death. However, the date always fell in the middle of Lent, which is already a period of behavioral restrictions for Catholic believers.

So that the celebration would not be overshadowed by the sacrifices of Lent, the Catholic Church lifted these restrictions on the date, making it a time for the Irish people to celebrate with abundant food, music, parties and drinks.

However, the celebration as we know it today would still take some time to happen.

Traditional pubs did not open on this holiday and only actively participated in the Saint Patrick's Day celebration in 1970, greatly encouraged by local breweries.
